Research Interests

Polymer Irradiation: Leading collaborative effort with FDA and food-interest companies to evaluate safety issues posed by irradiation of food-packages with gamma, e-beam and x-ray sources.

Plastics and Paper Recycling: Lead commercial collaboration to validate the safety of various recycled polymers for food-contact use.

Mathematical Modeling of Mass Transfer in Polymers: Compiling database of diffusion, permeation and solubility values for various polymer/penetrants combinations of importance in food quality. The research has developing a suite of mathematical models to predict the migration behavior of organics, oxygen and moisture in food packaging polymers.

Seal Integrity: Work catalogs seal defects in polymer packages and determines which are consequential for microbial infiltration and stress failure.

High Pressure Processing- Research examines the impact of high pressure processing on the physical, thermal, microbiological and chemical properties of foods and the functional and transport properties of polymers. Developed methods to determine/facilitate temperature and pH measurement during high-pressure treatment of foods.

Selected Professional Activities

Head the academic packaging program at the National Center for Food Safety and Technology. (1992-present)

Developed and currently operate the only academic pilot recycling line in the US. Undertake studies to validate the safety of post-consumer recycled resin for re- manufacture into second-generation containers. Efforts have resulted in FDA approval for several secondary recycled PET processes and generated improved cleaning approaches for polymer recycling. (1994-present)

Head the Polymer Irradiation Safety Consortium, a body of academic, industrial and government participants charged with expanding the number of FDA approved polymers, adhesives and additives allowable in packages used for foods stabilized by irradiation. Co-developed and presented at first national conference on irradiation of food-contact polymers. (1998-present)

Selected by NASA to serve as food-protocol reviewer for the manned space mission to mars. (1998-Present)

Prepared and submitted petition to FDA on the equivalency of e-beam, x-ray and gamma-radiation. Granted 2001.

Analyzed impact of ionizing radiation on various packaging polymers considered essential for FDA approval and provided information to FDA and Polymer Irradiation Task Force members. (2000-Present)

Delivered over 30 invited papers/symposia/media interviews on food and polymer irradiations issue (2000-Present).

Wrote the first published chapter on the impact of high pressure processing on organic packaging materials. The chapter examined the impact of high pressure on molecular and macroscopic behavior of polymers, with examples and extrapolations for biological macromolecules. 2002.

Directed the first national symposium on acrylamide pathways in food. Analyzed acrylamide content in home prepared foods. 2003-present.

Involved in US counterterrorism taskforce. Develop tamper-evident packaging and tamper evident strategies for bulk shipment of foods. 2003-present

Conducted research on High Pressure Processing affects on foods and food packaging. 2003-present.

What do PFAS Actions Tell us About State Regulatory Officials?

Last month we looked at some recent FDA action against perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, aka PFAS, some of which are used in grease-resistant coatings in paper and paperboard. Turns out, there’s a fair amount of state-level action as well.

For one thing, the organization who brought us the model toxics law back in the 1990s that prohibited intentional use of four heavy metals in packaging, is considering amending their model law to include PFAS and phthalates.
